The Trouble With Dove...
I was really conflicted when I looked at the most recent ad from the folks at Dove.
As you probably know, for the past few years – Dove has been working hard on their “Campaign for Real Beauty” which has produced some really thought-provoking images around the way the media constructs unrealistic images of women. This latest ad features a young girl who is being bombarded with images of women being forced to be thinner, tighter and younger. It’s extremely powerful.
On the one hand, you have to commend any company attempting to deviate from the standard ways women are presented. However, it doesn’t take a genius to recognize that this is a huge corporate gimmick which is ultimately designed to make women bigger consumers. Another problem is the fact that Dove’s parent company owns Slimfast and numerous other beauty products – isn’t this a tad contradictory?
The question remains – since low self esteem is often what drives female consumerism, is it possible for a corporation to truly inspire empowerment in women?
